Give My Poor Heart Ease: An oral history of the blues as heard by folklorist William Ferris

The book explores the musical roots of the blues and tells the stories of the musicians who lived and played the blues, from the obscure and dedicated, James “Son Ford” Thomas to the most famous and lauded, B.B. King. It recalls how the music developed stylistically, from working field chants to rollicking late nights with one-strand instruments, and how the music affected their lives.

Give My Poor Heart Ease has been selected as an Okra Pick by the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance and was awarded a certificate of merit by the Associate for Recorded Sound Collections Best Research in Recorded Blues.
